I was born staring up into the skies. As a child I
dreamed of being the first woman Thunderbird pilot
and I had my sights set on the Air Force Academy, but in the
end I decided to study veterinary medicine.
After
a handful of years
in the medical world I decided one day to finally learn
to fly. A few months later I’d completed my Private
certificate and decided that I couldn’t afford to
fly “for fun.” So I packed up the house, sold
everything that wouldn’t fit in the car, and the
cats and I drove from the SEA area to south Florida to
spend a year at a flight training academy.
Twelve
months later I graduated with my CFII/MEI and a Citation
500-series type rating. I’ve always been
a girl with good luck, and it didn’t fail me upon
graduation. I happened to be in the right time and right
place and
landed myself a jet job straight out of school. The cats
and I moved from Florida up to Virginia to fly Citations
for a small charter/management company. In the 18 months
I was there I learned a tremendous amount and flew enough
hours to get hired at a regional airline.
I’m
now based in Atlanta and fly as a First Officer in a CRJ-200
with Atlantic Southeast Airlines. It’s
lovely to finally be able to have a life outside of aviation – for
the first time in nearly five years! I usually fly four-day
trips and have at least 13 days off each month. Although
the actual
flying isn’t as exciting as corporate flying was, the
life I’m able to have when I’m not flying is
worth it.
But, I’m definitely still holding the vision that I’ll
find a great jet job much closer to home in the Seattle area
at some point!
When
I’m not flying I’m into horses (dressage,
eventing, show jumping) and spend a lot of my free time at
the barn of a former Olympic rider. Additionally, I’m
a major geocaching addict, and my partner and I love to travel
(good thing!) and eat.
