New to Yahoo Messenger?
Here's some instructions to get you started:
Download and Install Yahoo Messenger:
- First, you'll want to visit the Yahoo Messenger (YM) site: http://messenger.yahoo.com/and download the latest stable version of YM. Unless you are a computer geek, don't download the beta version as many features are not compatible with the latest stable version. Also, beta programs are usually a work in progress so they may contain annoying bugs.
- If you're located outside the United States, there are many international versions of YM available if you scroll down the YM page.
- Next, you'll want to temporarily disable your anti-virus before you begin the install. Follow the onscreen instructions, which will require a system re-boot to complete the install, and once complete, don't forget to ensure your anti-virus is "armed" once again.
Sign up for a Yahoo Messenger ID and get a list of "friends":
- Sign up for a Yahoo Messenger ID.
- Contact one of the leadership team (latest email contacts located here: http://ambassador99s.org/) with your new YM ID, and request they export a list of contacts to you.
- The member of the leadership team will then add your YM id to their list of contacts, and next time you sign into messenger you should see a pop up window asking if you'd like to add that person to your list of contacts - say yes! You should also see an option to accept the list of contacts - say yes!
To communicate with members on your list and/or join a meeting:
- Sign into YM, and make sure you're showing as "visible" - you can change your status in the "Messenger" menu at the top of the main YM screen, select "my status" - if your icon is showing in colour, you're "visible".
- To instant message (IM) anyone on the list, highlight the name and click once to see a list of icons - scroll your cursor over each one to see what they do - or double-click a name and the IM window will appear and you can start chatting.
- To initiate a conference with one or more people, go to "actions" at the top of the main YM window, click on "invite to conference" then select one or more names from the list and click "add", and then "invite" when your list is complete. Note, only invite those you see are online!
- To accept an invitation to join a conference, just say yes to the pop-up invitation!
- Once in a conference, you can invite more people by clicking on the "conference" menu at the top of the window, and select "invite more people" and follow the instructions.
That's it! You're good to go! Many simple formatting and preference options can be changed by playing around the various menus, consulting the (sometimes helpful) help files, or by asking other members.
